ABOUT THIS DEPARTMENT
The laboratory service at PGH Badulla is the largest of its kind in the province and the Laboratory is staffed 24/7 to support inpatient care and outpatient services and provides a wide variety of tests to diagnose and monitor diseases.
In addition to the services provided to the hospital, our laboratory extends the satellite services to peripheral hospitals of the province in order to strengthen the laboratory facilities of them and we have achieved the desired goals of launching the project.
The laboratory at PGH Badulla comprises of four divisions and each division is headed by consultant. We warmly welcome the consultant chemical pathologist newly appointed to our laboratory further strengthening the capacity of its services.
- Turn around time was significantly reduced for almost all the inward test lines
- Number of samples sent to TH Kandy & MRI has been reduced comparatively from 2019 to 2021.
- Hematology and Histopathology expanded as a 2 consultant unit.
Future Plan : According to Hospital Master Plan – project proposal submitted to request for a new Laboratory complex with latest technology & academic facilities
- We are planning to immediately start viral antibody screening tests eg: Hepatitis, Immune screening test and immunohistochemistry
- Regional service expansion – Provincial & beyond province (DGH Monaragala, GH Nuwaraeliya, GH Ampara)
As a Provincial General Hospital, we are giving our services mainly to General Hospital Badulla in addition to this hospital Base Hospitals, Peripheral Hospitals of the Uva Province. Following Microbiological tests will be done routinely

Laboratory Services
The haematology laboratory provides an array of routine investigations to both inward and out patients. These include full blood count, reticulocyte count, and blood picture examination, PT/lNR, APTT and ESR. These investigations are available on a daily basis.
Special investigations are available by prior appointment D These are bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy, Sickling test, Hb capillary electrophoresis, HAM test, Brewers test for G6PD deficiency, Urine for haemosiderin, Urine for haemoglobin, Osmotic fragility test, lnhibitor screening. In addition D-dimer testing is available for patients with COVID 19 infection
The performance and accuracy of laboratory test results ate ensured by daily run of internal quality control and participation in external quality assessment programme conducted by medical Research Institute, Colombo 08 .
Thalassemia screening programme
The main functions of this programme are to screen for Thalassemia syndromes with FBC, blood picture and Hb capillary electrophoresis, to arrive at a definitive diagnosis, family screening for carrier detection and to offer premarital counseling PGH Badulla is the sole centre for Thalassemia detection in Uva province.
Clinical Services
The haematology unit provides care for inpatients with haematological disorders referred by other specialities and lcus in PGH Badulla as well as nearby base hospitals.
(Diyathalawa and Welimada). Outpatient care is delivered by outpatient clinics held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. These clinics enable follow up of patients with benign and malignant haematological conditions and those who are on anticoagulants.
The Haematology Day unit provides inward care from 8am to 4pm in all seven days including public holidays & Sundays. Patients requiring blood and blood pro`duct transfusions, intravenous and subcutaneous drug administration, venesections, clotting factor replacement and selected chemotherapy drugs are admitted to the
day unit as day patients. In addition outpatient bone marrow biopsies are carried out at the haematology day unit.
Patients requiring inpatient care are admitted to the oncology wards (5 beds for male & 5 beds for female patients) and medical wards.
Haemophilia care
PGH Badulla is the haemophilia centre for the Uva
Province. Haemophilia patients are provided with both prophylactic and on demand therapy, while providing multidisciplinary care.
The Haematology Team
The Haematology team consists of two consultant Haematologists, two designated medical officers (MO and RHO), three nursing officers, seven medical laboratory technologists, 02 laboratory assistants, 05 junior staff members.
Laboratory Equipment
The laboratory is equipped with one fully automated seven part haematology analyser (BC6800) for full blood count analysis. Coagulation tests are done by semi- automated coagulation analyser. Laboratory is also equipped with a capillary electrophoresis analyser ( Sebia capillaries 2 flex piercing)
