ABOUT THIS DEPARTMENT
Blood bank at PGH Badulla functions as the Cluster Center blood bank of Badulla district providing blood and blood products, technical and clinical services to other blood banks in the district. The main functions of the blood bank are listed below.
- Collection of blood from voluntary non remunerated blood donors throughout the Badulla district
- Processing of the collected whole blood into different blood components namely packed red cells, platelets, buffy coat[WBC], fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate
- Testing of the donations for transfusion transmitted infections namely, HIV 1 & 11, hepatitis B & C, Syphilis and Malaria
- Donor blood grouping
- Antenatal blood grouping and antibody screening procedures for pregnant mothers
- Cross-matching and issue of blood for patients
- Storage and issue of blood components to patients and other cluster blood banks when needed
- Performing therapeutic plasma exchange procedures as and when requested
- Cross-matching and issue of blood and blood components to private sector hospitals
Newly Started Services for Patients
- Preparation of autologous platelet rich plasma [PRP]
- HLA typing facilities for patients and donors for Kidney and Bone marrow transplantations are provided by NBTS
- ROTEM analysis for real time coagulation profile

Special Messages to Patients
As blood and blood products are provided to all patients without replacement donations, the patients need to encourage their family members and friends to donate blood voluntary to the blood bank to maintain adequate stocks.
